4 Ways to Refocus Your Energy and Attention from Digital Doom

Doomscrolling isn’t your fault—but it’s definitely your biggest opp.

We live in an attention economy. Your time, energy, and attention are valuable, yet they are not infinite resources.

82% of Gen Z describe social media as addicting, with more and more research showing the negative impact of doomscrolling into oblivion.

Reclaiming focus in a world that thrives on distraction and external validation is a rebellious act of self-empowerment. Your tech should serve you, not the other way around.

This guide is your roadmap to breaking free from digital chains, debunking productivity myths, and connecting with real people who can help you feel human (and hopeful) again.

Destroy the Doom

SImply put, doom needs to die.

Doom is debilitating, deliberate, and dumb. The attention economy has commodified our focus, treating it as something to be bought and sold thanks to our 24/7 news cycle, surveilling social apps, and a consumption-first society.

It sucks, and it’s sucking the life out of us.

You cannot doomscroll and live a fulfilling, happy, and healthy life. These two things do not coexist.

So, let’s sabotage your chances of doomstrolling instead of sabotaging your potential for joy and success.

Ask yourself: Who benefits from my doom? Who makes money off my conveniently created fear and frustration? Why would they want me to feel hopeless?

Rewire Your Responses

Consuming too much doom will have your wires crossed and charred to a crisp.

What makes you reach for your phone in the first place? Boredom? Stress? Loneliness?

If you know your reasons for these reactions, you can rewire properly.

A quick way to instigate change is pinching yourself or snapping a hair tie on your wrist when you instinctively reach for your phone. This is a timeless trick to jolt you into the present moment while training your brain to break the spell of digital distraction.

Once you try this, you can incorporate something positive instead of screen time. Go for a short walk. Set a 5-minute timer on your microwave to do a chore you’ve been procrastinating. Write a handwritten note to a friend.

Doing anything else will add richness to your world instead of doomscrolling on screens that only increase your sense of suffering.

Decorate Your Digital Space

If aesthetics matter to you, then make it count.

Declutter and detox your phone, laptop, and apps like you would spring clean your closet or update your room.

Delete unnecessary apps that drain your storage and battery. Disable intrusive notifications that distract and deplete you. Unfollow unhelpful or toxic accounts that make you feel inadequate. You don’t need them.

What you need is to digital differently. Find the people, communities, and activities that push you to feel good and challenge you to keep improving. They exist, and you deserve to surround yourself with them.

Your digital space should feel like a sanctuary that allows you to be and act like your best self. Design it with detail.

Cleanse Your Brain

Like a pore-refining face mask or a car wash, picture how good it would feel for your brain to receive a deep clean.

You can reboot and refresh your brain like you take care of your tech. Unplug, recharge, and run updates. Sanitize and air it out. Replace your protective case.

Scheduling weekly sessions to detox your brain’s digital build-up will be your best bet to maintain and sustain your energy and attention in all areas of life.

It’s not easy to unlearn the lie that your value is solely in your online presence. It’s okay to be active and informed, but you can’t be those things every second of every day. Information is pointless if you can’t process it, and nobody can process everything happening in 2025.

Don’t let doom dictate your decisions.

Your attention is your power. Reclaim it, and you reclaim your life.

Remember: we’re raging against the machine, not letting the world turn us into one.
